Core Academics

FLI prides itself on its rigorous academic expectations and use of effective instructional strategies. The school utilizes assessment-driven instruction based on formal and informal evaluation of individual students' needs and strengths. FLI's core program includes:

Literacy: FLI staff utilizes the Balanced Literacy Program developed in New York City's District 2. The program includes whole class, small group, and individual instruction. The program focuses on word study, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, writer's workshops, and reading aloud.

Mathematics: FLI uses constructivist mathematics curriculums in all grades. Constructivist mathematics engages students in deep thinking about math through problems with real world contexts. Students develop number sense, computational skills, and mathematical thinking skills as they apply individual approaches to problem solving.

Social Studies: Through the research workshop model, FLI utilizes thematic-based social studies instruction while incorporating literacy skills and content area teaching to optimize student learning. Students read both informational and fictional texts connected to the overall theme. Students then use these texts as resources for learning and as a catalyst for discussions and writing activities.

Science: FLI utilizes an inquiry-based, hands-on approach to science learning. Each grade's science instruction follows a carefully planned scope and sequence in the content areas of earth science, physical science, and/or life science.

Embedded Principles and Technology

Our students are future leaders of society. Within all academic areas, FLI includes strategies to help students develop accountability, independence, stamina, and the ability to critically examine the social environment. FLI also integrates technology into its core academic instruction through the use of laptop computers and a wireless network.
